Prisoner to serve additional sentence for corrupting prison officer
A prisoner serving a 13-year sentence for rape will spend extra time behind bars after being convicted of encouraging a prison officer to have a sexual relationship with him. It’s the first time a serving prisoner in the South West has been convicted of an offence of this kind.
Bradley Trengove, 31, and former prison officer Cherrie-Anne Austin-Saddington, 28, from Weymouth, both pleaded guilty to several offences following an investigation by the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU).
The pair were found to have entered a relationship while Trengove was at HMP The Verne on Portland in Dorset, where Austin-Saddington worked.
Trengrove, who was convicted of rape in 2015, pleaded guilty last October to:
- encouraging/assisting in the commission of an indictable only offence
- possession of a digital device whilst inside a prison
- transmitting/causing the transmission of an image or sound from a prison
He was sentenced on Monday (12 May) to two years and three months which will begin on completion of his current 13-year sentence.
Austin-Saddington was handed a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to misconduct in a public office and conveying a prohibited article in or out of prison.
The offences took place between August 2022 and April 2023.
Both appeared via video link for the sentencing at Bournemouth Crown Court.
DI Alastair Quinn of the SWROCU said: “We are committed to working with our region’s prisons to root out corruption and will be looking to take similar action against other prisoners who seek to corrupt prison staff.
“Clearly, by entering into a relationship with a prisoner, Austin-Saddington was herself also committing a serious offence and undermining the already challenging work her former colleagues do.”
